Channel Stability and Stream Health Assessments

Channel stability and aquatic habitat conditions are initially determined through rapid assessments of defined reaches. These assessments also provide ’field truthing’ of the desktop analysis. The selection of appropriate assessment methods is based on the specific goals and objectives of the study. As these tools usually emphasize a component of channel form or function (i.e., stability or erosion, habitat, water quality), a more objective and complete overview or characterization is gained through the application of a number of standard methods. We generally apply two or more rapid assessment techniques, and one general observation-based typology. The results provide the baseline geomorphological data necessary to make informed management decisions and identify areas for more detailed investigation, including those that are sensitive to land use change.
